What do I do if a student requests assistance with a quiz, test, or exam during a tutoring session?

This article is for Upswing tutors, discussing Upswing's policy on helping students with any quizzes, tests, or exams during a tutorial session. While it's admirable to want to assist students with these sorts of assignments, instructors usually use these as a way to measure a student's understanding or abilities on their own, so Upswing assumes this is the case unless the instructor explicitly says otherwise.

Are we allowed to assist students with quizzes, tests, or exams during tutoring sessions?

The short answer is no. 

If a student presents material that is labeled as a quiz, test, or exam, you should politely decline to assist and refer students to Upswing's policy on academic integrity. 

I think a student has asked me to help with a quiz / test / exam, but I'm not sure. What do I do?

Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish whether an assignment is homework, a quiz, or something else. If you are unsure, politely ask the student if the material is a quiz, test, or exam and inform them of Upswing's academic integrity policy. If the student replies that the material is not a quiz, test, or exam, and you don't see any identifying language, then please proceed. Are we allowed to assist students with an old quiz, test, or exam or one that is labeled as practice, sample / example, review, or study material?

The short answer is yes.

However, please keep an eye out for language in assignment instructions that indicates whether the student is permitted to seek “outside” assistance or support from you. Often, instructors make this policy clear in their assignment guidelines.

Am I permitted to assist students with a quiz, test, or exam if the instructor has provided written permission?

Yes, but please ensure that the student shows you the written permission from the instructor before providing any assistance.
