What happens if I abandon, cancel, decline, or fail to answer a session request?

As a tutor with Upswing, we provide you with scheduling autonomy so that you can work when it's most convenient for you. However, this also means that you are ultimately responsible for the availability you post. 

The Upswing platform offers a range of availability tools, including an adjustable buffer period to prevent last minute session requests, if that's more comfortable for you. Therefore, you hopefully shouldn't need to abandon ("no show"), cancel, or miss session requests. We respect your time and acknowledge that sometimes our schedules get disrupted due to life circumstances and surprises, so this may mean occasionally not being able to comply with a session request, which is understandable.

However, to maintain ethical and high-quality service to our students, we have a policy to address tutors who habitually abandon, cancel, decline, and fail to answer sessions. If we see a pattern emerging here, tutors are subject to discipline which may include termination. You can read about our policies in more detail below.

Tutor-Abandoned Session

If you abandon a session, you will receive an auto-generated message from Upswing, which you must reply to within 48 business hours. In addition, we ask that you follow up with the student and offer to reschedule. 

Tutor-Cancelled Session

These cancellations should be rare, as you have complete scheduling autonomy. Please ensure you are communicating with students if you need to cancel a session so that students can either reschedule with you at a time that works for both or they can find another tutor to work with at that time. 

Declined Session

A likely reason you might decline a session request would be that you don't feel qualified to support the subject the student is requesting. If you are receiving session requests for out of scope subjects, you should review your subject offerings to ensure they are current. If you receive three or more out of scope subject requests, please inform Tutor Management at [e-mail]. Otherwise, if you find yourself needing to decline session because of time constraints, please adjust your schedule as needed so that students see your most up-to-date availability and can schedule with you accordingly.
