Using the Ana Data App to Dive Into Campaign and Conversation Data

Introduction

The Ana Data App provides detailed insight into student engagement with Ana campaigns and the conversations students are having with Ana. Within the app, you can view campaign performance metrics, response breakdowns, and individual student conversations. 

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to use the Ana Data App to do the following:

  1. Quickly view campaign-specific data with one click

  2. Easily view a list of students that have responded to a campaign with a certain decision tree choice

  3. View a student's whole conversation history with Ana

  4. See a list of students that have received a message from Ana containing a specific word or phrase

  5. Find students that have reached out to Ana about a certain topic or issue


How to Quickly Filter for Campaign-Specific Data

  1. Within the Ana Data App, access the Overview page from the top menu. Scroll down to the Campaign Details section of the page to find the Campaigns Sent table. 
  2. In the Campaign Name column, click on the title of the campaign you are interested in learning more about.Campaigns Sent - Click Campaign Name to Filter.png
  3. Clicking the campaign title will filter the data on the Overview page to only show data related to the campaign you clicked. Scroll down to the Initial Student Responses to Ana Campaign table to view high-level response data for this campaign. View Initial Student Responses to Campaign.png
  4. If the campaign used a double decision tree, check the Initial and Second Student Responses table for additional data. Note: If the campaign only used a single decision tree, the Initial and Second Student Responses table will be blank.

How to View a List of Students that Selected a Specific Campaign Response

  1. Within the Initial Student Responses to Ana Campaign table on the Overview page, you will find the number of students that selected a specific response to an Ana campaign. To see a list of students that responded with one of the choices, click on the option in the Initial Student Response column.Ana Data App - Click Response.png
  2. After clicking on the decision tree option, navigate to the Student- and Message-Level Data page to view the All Conversations table. The All Conversations table will be filtered by student_response, with the response you clicked in the Initial Student Responses to Ana Campaign table selected. This cross-page filtering by student_response allows you to quickly and easily view a list of students that have responded to an Ana campaign in a specific way.


How to View a Student’s Full Conversation History with Ana

If you'd like to learn about how a student has interacted with Ana over time, you can pull the complete, chronological conversation thread between Ana and a specific student for any date range you choose within the All Conversations table. 

  1. Set your date range.
    • Choose a window large enough to include the entire period you want.

  2. Apply a filter to the view the conversation data for a single student:

    • Filter using the student's name: apply filters on the first_name and last_name variables.

    • Filter using the student's email address: apply a filter on the user_email variable.

    • Filter using the student's ID#: apply a filter on the external_user_id variable.

  3. View the All Conversations table:

    • Each message between the student and Ana will appear within the All Conversations table in chronological order.

    • The message_direction column allows you to follow the dialogue between Ana and the student.

How to Find Students Who Received Specific Support from Ana

The All Conversations table can be filtered to identify students who received information about particular support resources (example: food pantry, writing center, childcare).

  1. Adjust the date range to your period of interest (semester, academic year).
  2. Filter by message_direction and select Sent to student.

  3. Filter by ana_message:
    • Change the filter method to Match Values → Contains.
    • Enter a keyword or phrase from Ana's response (Example: if you would like to find which students received information about childcare resources, you could put “childcare” or provide a URL Ana sends to students “https://ana.upswing.io/ana_childcare”).
    • Click Apply to apply the filter.

  4. Tip: if the word/phrase you are searching for is included in the Ana campaign message, apply a filter on the campaign_message variable (campaign_message = 0)

  5. View the list of students that received a message from Ana containing the keyword or phrase you filtered for.

How to Find Students Who Requested Specific Information from Ana

The All Conversations table can also be filtered to identify students who requested information about particular support resources from Ana.

  1. Adjust the date range to your period of interest (semester, academic year).
  2. Filter by message_direction and select Received from student.

  3. Filter by ana_message:
    • Change the filter method to Match Values → Contains.
    • Enter a keyword or phrase a student may send in a message to Ana (Example: if you would like to learn which students asked Ana for help, you could put “help”).
    • Click Apply to apply the filter.

  4. View the list of students that sent Ana a message containing the keyword or phrase you filtered for.

Best Practices

  2. Always cross-reference campaign send dates with the date range in your filters for accurate results.
  3. When analyzing decision tree responses, start with the Overview tab before moving to the Student- and Message-Level Data view for deeper insights.
