When searching for your subject to find a tutor, you'll see a list of all of the tutors that are able to help. This article provides helpful instructions showing you how you can use the filters to refine the results, allowing you to find a tutor that is available for the type of session you prefer.
You are able to apply the following filters on the Tutoring page:
- Session date
- Session time
- Session location: online vs. in-person
- Language spoken by the tutor
- The type of tutor: a campus tutor vs. Upswing tutor
How to Filter Your Search Results
After searching for your course in the search bar, you will see the names and profiles of tutors able to help you with your subject. Directly below the subject search bar, you will see the different filters you can use to narrow down your search results to help you find the right tutor for you. Additionally, you will see the number of tutors able to assist with your subject.
Filtering by Session Date
The Date filter for the Tutor Search results allows you to select from tutors available for sessions on the date of your choosing. To apply the date filter, click on the Date chip and select the date you would like to meet with a tutor.
If the date you would like to select is grayed out and cannot be clicked, your school / institution likely has a limit set on how far in advance students can schedule sessions. If your school does have this limit in place, you will only be able to select dates within the date range set by your school.
After selecting the date, the date picker will close automatically, and the results will update. To change the session date, click on the Date chip again and select the new date.
Filtering by Session Time
The Time filter for the Tutor Search results allows you to select from tutors who are available at a specific time of your choosing, and it is often combined with the date filter, explained above.
To apply the time filter, click on the Time chip and select the time you would like to meet with a tutor. If you have not filtered for a specific date, the time selection dropdown will only display available times for the remainder of today. If you have applied a date filter, the dropdown menu will display all available times.
After selecting the time, the time selection dropdown will close automatically, and the results will update. To change the time you selected, click on the Time chip again and select your new time.
Filtering by Session Location
The Location filter for the Tutor Search results allows you to select from tutors who are available either online or in-person at a specific location. Please note: this filter is not visible if your school / institution does not have their own tutors on the Upswing platform.
To apply the location filter, click on the Location chip and select either Online or In-person locations.
- If you select In-person locations, the menu will expand further to display all the campus locations. You can select Any location if you don't have a preference, or you can choose a specific location within the menu.
After selecting your location choice, the location dropdown menu will close automatically, and the results will update. To change the location you selected, click on the Location chip again and select your new choice.
Filtering by Language Spoken
The Language filter for the Tutor Search results allows you to select from tutors who are able to provide tutoring in your preferred language.
To apply the language filter, click on the Language chip and scroll through the list to find your preferred language, or use the search function at the top of the menu. When viewing the list of languages in the dropdown menu, you will notice that some are written in black, while others are gray:
- If there are tutors in the search results able to tutor in a language, the language will be written in black and can be selected.
- If there aren't any tutors able to tutor in a language within the menu, that language will be grayed out and cannot be selected.
After selecting the language of your choosing, the language menu will automatically close and the results will update to show tutors fluent in the language you selected.
If you visit the profile of a tutor within the filtered list, you will be able to see the tutor's fluent languages at the top of their profile, as shown in the image below.
Filtering by Tutor Type
The Tutor Type filter for the Tutor Search results allows you to select from either school tutors or Upswing tutors. Please note: if your school / institution does not use Upswing tutors, you will not see this filter option. This means that all of the tutors you will choose from will be tutors at your school / institution.
To apply the tutor type filter, click on the Tutor type chip and select either [School] tutor or Upswing tutor. If there are no tutors in the search results for one of those tutor types, that tutoring type will be grayed out and you won't be able to select that option.
Once you make your selection, the tutor type menu will close automatically, and the results will update to show you tutors that match the type you selected.
What to do if no tutors that match your filters
If there aren't any tutors that match the filters you applied, you will see a message that reads "No tutors with this criteria are available", as well as instructions to either change your search criteria or clear the filters you applied.
Clearing All Filters
If you would like to clear all of the filters you've applied, you can either:
- Click the Clear all filters (#) button in red next to the search bar
- Click the Clear all filters button on the bottom of the page
Removing an Individual Filter
If you would like to remove a single filter, you can click on the x within the filter chip you want to remove.
